Real Stories of Animals that Saved People:

In Denver, Colorado, two-year-old Hannah began to choke on her breakfast just as her babysitter left the room for a moment.  A parrot named Willie frantically flapped his wings and screeched “Mama! Baby! Mama! Baby!”  The babysitter heard him, quickly returned, and was able to save the little girl from choking.

Rheal Guindon watched in terror as his parents drowned during a camping trip in Ontario, Canada.  Devastated and panicked, Rheal attempted to walk to the nearest town.  As the cold night fell, he didn’t have the energy to reach his destination.  He lay on the cold, hard ground, and suddenly felt something warm and furry press up against him, keeping him warm.  When he awoke the next morning, he discovered three beavers, snuggled up against him.

A Jack Russell terrier named George fought to save five children from an attack by two pit bulls in 2007.  George suffered serious injuries and had to be euthanized.  He was later awarded a PDSA Gold Medal (an animal bravery award for saving human or non-human life when its own life is in danger) and commemorated with a bronze statue.

In 2017, marine biologist Nan Hauser was swimming in a whale sanctuary off the coast of the Cook Island in the South Pacific when a humpback whale protected her from a tiger shark’s attack.

A dog named Orion tirelessly swam during a flash flood and rescued 37 people. The torrential rains killed thousands of people in Venezuela in December,1999.

Twenty-six-year-old free diver Yang Yun suffered cramps that paralyzed her legs during a competition in China. Miraculously, a Beluga whale named Mila sensed that something was wrong and used his tiny teeth to gently carry Yang Yun safely to the surface, saving her life.

Baby elephant Ning Nong kept an 8-year-old British girl named Amber alive when a tsunami occurred in Thailand in 2004.  Ning Nong leaned against a wall and fought off the enormous pressure of the seawater, which gave Amber a chance to climb to safety.

In Oxford, Ohio, a woman was attacked from behind by a man who was choking her with her own purse straps and punching her viciously in the forehead. A deer suddenly ran out from a nearby bush and charged the attacker who fled without snatching the woman’s purse or harming her further.

After a car accident, service dog Endal pulled his unconscious owner into recovery position, retrieved the phone from under the car, fetched and covered his owner with a blanket, and ran to a nearby hotel to get help.

 In August 1986, a young boy named Levan Merritt fell into the gorilla enclosure at a zoo and lost consciousness.  A gorilla named Jambo protected him from other gorillas and stroked the boy’s back.  The boy later woke up and was rescued by a paramedic and two zookeepers.

A pot-bellied pig named Lulu broke through her backyard fence when her owner suffered a heart attack. Lulu injured herself on the fence, which left her bleeding.  She scampered to the middle of a nearby road to flag down passerby for help.

In 2004, a pod of dolphins appeared from nowhere, circled around a lifeguard and three young girls in the sea as they drove a shark away.

A pit bull named Lilly frantically pulled her unconscious owner from an oncoming train in 2012.  Lilly was hit by the train and lost her leg.

A goat in Australia named Mandy cuddled, fed, and kept her 78-year-old owner alive for five days after he fell and fractured his hip in 2012.

Simon Stegall, 42, is a diabetic man who was saved thanks to his rabbit, Dory.   Simon suffered a diabetic reaction as he began to slump into a coma. His wife, Victoria, initially thought he had simply fallen asleep and it wasn’t until Dory anxiously jumped on his owner’s chest and started tapping and digging that she realized something was terribly wrong. Victoria immediately called for ambulance who were able to bring his blood sugar levels back to normal.

In 2008, Ronnie Dabal was fishing for tuna at Puerto Princesa Bay in the Philippines when a storm suddenly capsized his small boat.  Ronnie battled the waves for hours. Just as he lost the last of his strength, about 30 dolphins and a couple of whales appeared and began to push the boat to the shore at Barangay Beach.

In Ethiopia, several men abducted a 12-year-old girl and savagely beaten her during the captivity.  Three lions apparently heard the girl’s cries and chased away the kidnappers, protected the young girl for over a day and a half until authorities arrived several later.  According to Sargent Wedajo’s description to the Associated Press, “They (lions) stood guard until we found her and then they just left like a gift and went back into the forest.”
